California's minimum wage will increase by one dollar on January 1, 2020, paying $13 an hour for larger businesses, and $12 an hour for businesses employing fewer than 25 employees. As wages rise, agricultural growers anticipate cutting back on overtime hours for their workers.

However, the consumer cost is likely negligible. Philip Martin, an agricultural labor economist at UC Davis, estimates that by 2022 for the average grocery bill of $45, a shopper would be about a dollar more a month.
